Candidate Tuesday Tips #3
Hey there! It’s Dan from CCR Search Recruitment Agency. Today’s #CandidateTuesdayTips are focused on how to get the job when you’re not fully qualified but can confidently do the job. Let’s dig in.
👉 During the interview, if the person asks about an experience that you have no knowledge of, don’t defend your background! Instead, show vulnerability, be honest, and tell them “how you will” learn, ramp, and gain the needed experience.
💪 The key here is to get the interviewer to envision how you will be doing the job in the future. Because ultimately, that’s what they’re looking for. This strategy probably won't work if you're trying to be a Neurosurgeon with a degree in Accounting, but it will work if you're looking to move from HR with an Accounting firm to an HR role with a Hospital.
👉 Another way to prepare for an interview is to read the job description and write down potential questions an interviewer might ask based on the job description.
💪 A prime way to do this is to ask yourself “What would they say if…." and write down the answers. Practice your responses and prepare mock interviews with your pet Fluffy, your Mom, or your friend Deb down the road to be ready for the unexpected.
👉 Closing the (experience) gap on your resume:
💪 Do a cover letter expressing these 3 things:
1. Enthusiasm
2. Motivation
3. How you are a great fit for the employer long term
👊 Pro tip, if you're working to get a job for which you are not qualified, a cover letter can separate you from the other 90% of candidates who statistically don't do them. Additionally, it gives you a great opportunity to sell yourself for the role and demonstrate how your existing skills align with the job requirements.
Companies don’t just want to hire someone just to fill the role. They want to hire someone who is going to stay for the long run, which could be you if you take the right approach!
